What We Offer
Serving and Loving Our Neighbors Through Ministry
Bethlehem House Shelter
Our homeless shelters on St. Thomas and St. Croix provide a safe environment and daily meals to men, women and children. Shelter staff facilitates referrals to mainstream and other services.
Soup Kitchens
Our soup kitchens on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John provide hot meals Monday through Friday. Catholic Charities staff members are able to monitor the clients, many of whom are chronically homeless, to ensure that they are receiving appropriate services. Our Outreach Services, which are closely aligned with soup kitchen activities, connect individuals to mainstream and non-profit service providers, facilitate health and mental health clinic appointments, and offer assistance navigating the Medicaid, Medicare and SNAP systems of benefits. In many cases, outreach workers will deliver hot meals to home bound and elderly clients.
Health Care for the Homeless
A monthly medical clinic, held at the Bethlehem House Shelter on St. Thomas, is a collaboration between physicians, medical professionals, volunteers and Catholic Charities. A host of medical services, including general health, dental and psychiatric screening and treatment are provided to homeless individuals on St. Thomas and St. John.
Summer Camp
In the spring of 2007, Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands collaborated with Special Olympics of the Virgin Islands to begin the first Camp Shriver in the Caribbean. The camp began years earlier at the Maryland home of Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver with the purpose of offering children with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to attend a summer camp with an emphasis on athletic activities. Catholic Charities continues to sponsor a summer camp on St. Thomas in the same spirit as the original Camp Shriver. Many of the counselors who received training for the original camp are still active along with student and adult volunteers.
